2021 Competition

The Kathleen Ferrier Competition 2021

66th Competition

The live preliminary auditions for the 2021 Kathleen Ferrier Awards were due to start in March 2021 but following the increase in cases of Covid-19 at the beginning of the year and new lockdown the Trustees of the Kathleen Ferrier Awards have decided to postpone the 2021 Competition.

The closing date for applications will now be Saturday 26 June 2021. Preliminary auditions will be held from Sunday 12th September until Saturday 18 September, the Semi-Final will be on Friday 12 November and the Final on Sunday 14 November, all at Henry Wood Hall, London. As in 2020, the Semi-Final and Final will be recorded for subsequent transmission on-line.

The Rules and Regulations regarding age, residency, education and repertoire requirements will not change from those already advertised. Revised application forms will be available on this page as soon as possible.

The competition is open to singers of any nationality who, on or before 1 February 2021, have completed at least one year of a continuous higher education course in music at a recognised conservatoire or music school in the United Kingdom (UK) or Republic of Ireland (RoI) or who have completed the equivalent year of continuous study in the UK or RoI with a recognised vocal coach; they must also have their main residence in the UK or RoI as at 1 February 2021, and applicants may be required to produce evidence to support this.

All singers must be 28 or under on 23 April 2021. For 2021 only there will be an exception for those singers who deferred their 2020 entry: they may be 29 or under by 23 April 2021, and the residency requirement will not apply to them.

An accompanist whose singer(s) reaches the semi-final or final rounds of the Competition will be eligible to compete for the Help Musicians Accompanist’s Prize if, as at 1 February 2021, they have their main residence in the UK and are 28 or under on 23 April 2021. Again for 2021 only there will be an exception for those accompanists who deferred their 2020 entry: they may be 29 or under by 23 April 2021, and the residency requirement will not apply to them.

As well as a first prize of £12,500 and a second prize of £6,000, there is the Ferrier Loveday Song Prize of £5,000 and Help Musicians Accompanist’s Prize of £5,000.
